ANZ National sheds 100 jobs
 ANZ National has announced nearly 100 job cuts this week, most of which are the latest in the bank’s move to cut costs by offshoring work to Bangalore. Bank workers union Finsec (New Zealand) says the bank has also backed away from prior public commitments to provide all affected staff other work.

Caribbean: Royal Bank refuses to meet with UNI Finance Unions
 In early January, leaders of five UNI Caribbean Finance Unions met in Trinidad to consider the implications of the acquisition by the (RBC) Royal Bank of Canada of the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (RBTT) in mid 2008. Strategic and coordinated action by UNI affiliates in the region has become necessary as the effects of the acquisition on job security as well as on terms and conditions of workers is very uncertain.

Germany: Partial nationalisation of Commerzbank necessary
 UNI Fiance's affiliate ver.di regards the partial nationalisation of Commerzbank as necessary for strengthening a systemically-important bank. It expects that the owners, especially the German government, will ensure that job losses are avoided as much as possible and the current takeover of Dresdner Bank is managed in a socially responsible way.

Santander to axe 1,900 jobs in UK
 1,900 jobs will go next year in the UK as the Spanish-based bank integrates the operations of Alliance & Leicester as well as the branches and deposits of Bradford & Bingley. These two banks were acquired this year and follow the acquisition of Abbey in 2004.

HBOS-Lloyds TSB: Union asks for guarantees over jobs
 UNI Finance affiliate, Accord, asked the British government to impose tougher conditions on the HBOS-Lloyds TSB merger to protect staff from redundancies. There is speculation that between 14,000 and 40,000 jobs could be axed.

BNP Paribas to take control of Fortis
 BNP Paribas will become the biggest banking group in the Euro zone after taking control of Fortis in Belgium and Luxembourg as well as its Belgian insurance operations and Turkish banking unit. UNI Finance is concerned about the consolidation of the finance industry that is the result of the financial crisis.

Unions press a global agreement with Brazilian banks
 UNI global union and the Brazilian banking trade union federation Contraf-CUT have met the country’s bank employers in Sao Paulo to press for a global agreement.
Contraf-CUT president Vagner Freitas urged the banks to join in a working group to examine the details of a global agreement - which would establish dialogue and rights in Brazilian banks as they grow their operations internationally.

Citigroup takes over Wachovia in another wave of bailouts
 US giant Citigroup rescued Wachovia, the country's sixth-largest lender, in a government-sponsored bailout. Other financial institutions were taken over by their government this week in Germany, Iceland, the United Kingdom and Belgium. UNI Finance warns that the financial crisis is leading to a merger rush that creates more financial giants that will be too big to fail in the next crisis.
